This week was my last week in the field and I am going to miss my students so much! I was able to build strong positive relationships with them while teaching. I got to know my student's culture, needs, backgrounds, and personal lives. I did my best this year to try to foster a growth mindset in my students. In my first blog post this semester I talked about how many of my students have a fixed mindset. In Opening Minds, the author states that the teacher can use his/her language to have students develop a growth mindset, where the students believe they are capable! I did this during my field expereince and saw my students start to change in little ways. Reflecting on this, I wish I worked even harder to use a growth mindset, and want to implement it in the start of the school year for next year! I wrote personal growth mindset notes to say goodbye to my lovely students.

Moving on, this week my student and I read a realistic fiction text about Hurricane Sandy. This was building off the text we explored last, in regards to Hurricane Katrina (Classrooms that Work). I pulled a small group of students to give extra instruction based on their needs. Strategies That Works states that small groups can provide guidance to the differing literacy needs of students. We read the text and had to identify the main idea of the text with key details. In doing this I explained what a main idea was too, so they were clear on what we are doing( Differentiated Instructional Strategies). This was identifying gaps in subject matters. I also talked about how we as Floridans can connect to the text, which my students enjoyed doing! I planned for possible student responses in my instruction ahead of time as I wanted to be prepared in my teaching for possible student responses. I also wanted to teach vocabulary with this text, as I have serval ELL students who are still learning the English language and what words means. I taught the new words with movement and related it back to the students lives. I then engaged them in a discussion about the main idea after we read the text and looked for key details. This all helped my instruction be effective and engaged my students. All of my students were focused and were interested in the text!

Overall, I enjoyed being in a 3rd grade classroom, but I am so excited to be moving on to a year 1 classroom in Cambridge for the summer and to a kindergarten class for the the whole year staring in the fall! My main goal moving forward to is great a classroom fosters inquiry. I am also excited to see how play affects learning.

Till next time,

Ms, Becht
