I selected the task of managing the materials needed to integrate technology. I decided to pick this task as I believe technology is a growing part of education. I predict that as I continue to move along in my teaching career that the use of technology in schools will increase.
My students use laptops everyday in the classroom! Each student has their own laptop that are touchscreen compatible and have wireless internet. The students use the laptops for a variety of reasons, but primarily for I-ready, which is a program for literacy. I watched my CT manage the laptops early in my field experience. I asked her how she taught the students how to use the laptops. My CT said t it took time to get the students familiar with the laptops. She broke up how to use the laptops into 10 minutes chucks daily so they could grow familiar with them. The First Six Weeks of School textbook says to clearly set expectation for students when it comes to interactive learning activities. The laptops constitute as interactive learning because they students are actively learning on the laptops and they are pushed into their zone of proximal development when they learn how to navigate the computer independently. My CT goes over the expectations when students are checking out the laptops and she has them posted in the classroom.
Moving on, one effective practice from Classrooms That Work textbook that I saw that relates to this task is a wide variety of materials being used. In Classrooms That Work, the authors state that a wide variety of materials is pivotal to have in a classroom in order for learning to be highly effective. I see this practice take place daily when the students work on their laptops. Recently, my students had the opportunity to use Classflow in the classroom! Prometheanworld.com states that Classflow is a software that “motivates students via engagement and collaboration and enriches the learning experience by streaming content across classroom devices”. This software makes learning unique and fun! This is one example of the practice in action.
I had my own chance to manage the students and the laptops. This experience went well and I learned from it! I had the students get their laptops by calling out their student numbers in sequential order. I reviewed the expectations with them while they were getting their computers. I also had my students get their thinking caps on and told them to get ready to learn! Managing the students and the technology was fairly easy for me to do as my students knew the expectations. Next time I do this I want to challenge my student to log on without any help from my CT or I. This will help them become more independent and to self monitor themselves. My CT said I did well on this task and that she has no recommendations for me next time. In my future class I want technology to play a large role. Doing this task has made me reflect and see how technology is a massive part of education. I would love to teach a lesson on the impact technology makes in my future classroom.
