This week I developed an activity to get to know my students better. I also wanted my students to get to know me, and this activity gave me to chance to tell my students about myself. This activity fit into my student’s literacy block as it involved drawing and writing to communicate to me what their favorite things are. I was given a 3o minute time block to introduce myself along my favorite things to the class and to have the students complete the Getting to Know Me worksheet. My example served as a model for my students to follow, while also telling them more about me. I left my example up on the board near my desk and plan to leave it up for a while, so my students can remember it and facts about me.

I found a worksheet template online called "My Favorite Things" and I added to it to make it appropriate for kindergarten. I put pictures to describe the words that were on the worksheet for my English Language Learner students. This gave them examples in case they did not know what the word were, as I have some non-English speakers. I passed out the worksheet to each table for them to get started. During this time, I walked around the class to see how they were doing. I assisted students who needed help and engaged in conversation about their favorite things while I was working with them.
I learned so much after this activity and talking to my students! I know more about their hobbies, families, and what they enjoy. This has aid me in building relationships with my students. I believe that getting to know each other is important as it can foster growth in learning. I also greet my students and talk to them when they arrive to keep getting to know them.
